How is God our Good Shepherd?

In Bible days, and today in many places worldwide, good shepherds care for their sheep. King David in the Bible was a shepherd who cared for his sheep before he became King of Israel.

David wrote Psalm 23 in the Bible, which talks about how God is like a good shepherd caring for us who are like His sheep. Here is Psalm 23 and some thoughts about this wonderful psalm.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside quiet waters.

He restores my soul;

He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You have anointed my head with oil;

My cup overflows.

Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

God is our wonderful heavenly Father and He is like a good shepherd to us.  He cares for us and provides for our needs.  He loves us and He will lead us in peace and His righteousness for His name’s sake and will give us His peace in our hearts.

Even when we are in difficult circumstances, we need not fear because God is with us; His strength and His correction will lead us and protect us and comfort us.  Even when we are in sight of our enemies, God will provide for us and give us His blessing and abundance.

Because God is our shepherd, His goodness and His lovingkindness will go with us all our lives, and we will live with God now and forever in heaven.
