What is the Sermon on the Mount?

The Sermon on the Mount is perhaps the most famous sermon in all of history.  What was it and why was it so important?

The Sermon on the Mount was the talk that Jesus gave to His followers from a mountainside. It is written about in the book of Matthew chapters 5 through 7 and it is the longest talk that Jesus gave that we have a record of.

In it Jesus talks about God; the Kingdom of God; many spiritual principles; and how we should live. It begins with what are known as the Beatitudes -- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" is the first one.

There are many famous statements that have become known to millions through the ages, such as Jesus saying "You re the salt of the earth...You are the light on the world. A city set in a hill cannot be hidden...Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven..."

The Lord's prayer is also in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus also gives wonderful encouragements to us. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."

The Sermon on the Mount is wonderful Scripture for you to read and ask God to speak to your heart!
