Why Is there an Easter Bunny?

What does the Easter bunny have to do with Jesus?

Not much!

The Easter bunny really has nothing to do with Jesus. Two holidays have gotten mixed together, much like what happens at Christmas.

The true meaning of Easter is Jesus rising from the dead. On Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, we commemorate Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.  The Bible says He died on Friday and rose from the dead on Sunday. So we celebrate on Easter Sunday Jesus rising from the dead. This is supremely important and it is right and fitting that we honor Jesus on these days and always.

The "Easter bunny" is a holdover from various spring festivals that have nothing to do with Jesus. While bunnies are nice and cute, they have nothing to do with Jesus (other than the fact that God made everything and He made bunnies cute!).

In our household, we always wanted our kids to know that the real meaning of Easter is Jesus. It is similar to the celebration of Christmas, which should really be a celebration of the birth of Jesus but has become mixed with Santa Claus and reindeers and lots of presents.

So the Easter bunny is cute, but we should focus on Jesus -- the real meaning of Easter is Jesus rising from the dead. And we can praise God and celebrate that every day of the year!
