What Do The Gospels Say About Who Jesus Is?

Almost everyone in the world has heard the name Jesus before, but many many people have false ideas about who He is or do not really know who He is. Let's take a look at what the gospels have to say about who Jesus is, including claims that He himself made.

1. Jesus is the everlasting creator, who was, is, and will always be.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:1-5

"And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed." John 17:5

"No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man." John 3:13

2. Jesus is Fully God.
While many people make the argument that Jesus never claimed to be God, there are many verses in the Bible that prove otherwise. Jesus knew that He was God and so did many other people.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

"I and my Father are one" John 10:30

"but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”John 10:38

"And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone."Luke 18:19

3. Jesus Is Fully Man
Jesus had to be flesh and blood to pay for our sins. He was born of a woman; He had physical needs such as eating and sleeping. He felt pain, both physical and emotional and has feelings just like we do.

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us)."     Matthew 1:23

"On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. " Mark 11:12

"When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept." John 11:33-35

4. Jesus is God's Only Son

"And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God." Luke 1:35

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

"Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Mark 1:11

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.     John 3:16

5. Jesus is the ONLY way to Heaven. He lived a sinless life on the earth and died on the cross for the sins of the world.

"The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"      John 1:29

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." John 3:36

"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

I hope these verses help clear up any confusion you may have about who Jesus is. When we read the word, it is made very clear to us who He is and just how much He loves us!
