As if, being visited by an angel wasn't amazing enough, the angel Gabriel gave Mary some more than amazing news! How did Mary respond to Gabriel's message?
Even though at first Mary questions how this will happen since she is a virgin, she is not questioning God's, she is just wondering how it will come to be. Gabriel explains that nothing is impossible with God and Mary accepts what he says and does not protest God's plans.
"And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her." Luke 1:38
The word Mary uses here is doulē and means handmaiden or bondslave. She is saying that she will obey and humbly submit to God's will. Even though Mary does not understand it, she knows God can and will do the impossible even through a young unmarried girl from Nazareth. Like Mary, we too can humbly submit to God's will and invite Him to use us to help accomplish His purposes!
