When you see a rainbow in the sky what do you think about? Do you think about the weather, equality, or about what it really represents? Personally, I think of how amazing God is and how thankful I am for the beautiful promise that stunning image stands for.
You see after God had destroyed almost everything on earth with a great flood. Noah, his family and the animals that were saved left the ark to start a new life. That is when God put the rainbow in the sky as a sign of His covenant promise. What is that promise? Let's take a look at Genesis 9 and see what we can find out about it.
"And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living creatures: Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. And whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of every kind that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:12-16
God made the colorful rainbow as a reminder of His promise to never destroy the whole world again by a flood. It is a sign of God's covenant not just with Noah and his family, but with all of the inhabitants of the earth. Isn't it comforting to see that beautiful bow in the sky and know that God remembers His promise? Every time we see a rainbow in the sky it should remind us of how much God loves us and that He keeps His promises!
