Jesus told His disciples that He was going to send the Helper. Who was the Helper and when did He come?
"But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me." John 15:26 ESV
The Helper that Jesus said He was going to send is the Holy Spirit. In the King James Version of the Bible, we see the word comforter in place of helper. The Greek word used here is parakletus, which means "one who comes alongside to help."
When was He sent? The Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost, which was ten days after Jesus had ascended into Heaven and 50 days after Jesus' resurrection. It is because of the Holy Spirit that thousands believed and were baptized after Peter's sermon.
"And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:38
God's Holy Spirit living in us is the only reason that we are able to live for Christ. He gently shows us our sins leading us to repentance while giving us His strength and peace in times of discouragement and sorrow.
"And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." Romans 5:5
I am so thankful for the blessing and help of our great Helper, aren't you?
