Though the Renaissance cemented modern conceptions of angels as cute, winged babies, their appearance in the Bible is completely different.
Hebrews 1:14 defines them as spirit beings, but they appear as human men to Abraham in Genesis 18, to Joshua in Joshua 5:13, and to disciples of Jesus in Mark 16:5. There’s no record of them appearing as women.
The Bible also describes angels that are completely otherworldly, terrifying and wonderful. The cherubim in Ezekiel 10 have four wings and four faces: “one face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.” The book of Revelation describes the angels called seraphim, who surround the throne of God, as having "six wings “ and being "covered with eyes all around.”
